How to Choose Between a Web App, Mobile App, and SaaS Platform

Should you build a web app, a mobile app, or a SaaS platform?

The answer depends on your target users, business model, workflows, and launch goals.

• A web app is often the best starting point when users need access across devices, the product does not depend heavily on phone-specific features, and speed to market matters. A web app can be extended to be a full blown SaaS platform. Also, if you want to serve a native feel of a mobile/desktop to your users, you can add Progressive Web Apps (PWA) to your web app, without the need to build a native mobile application.

• A mobile app may be better when the product relies on push notifications, offline access, camera, location, frequent daily use, or app store distribution.

• A SaaS platform is usually the right model when users need accounts, dashboards, subscriptions, roles, permissions, reporting, and ongoing workflows delivered through the cloud.

Founders should avoid choosing a platform based only on what sounds impressive. The wrong choice can increase cost, slow launch, and create unnecessary complexity.

Ask these questions before deciding:

• Who are the first users?
• Where will they use the product?
• How often will they use it?
• What device will they naturally reach for?
• Does the product need mobile-specific features?
• Does it need subscriptions or recurring billing?
• Will there be multiple user roles?
• Does the business need admin controls?
• How quickly does the first version need to launch?
• What budget is available for version one?
